Jacques Nicolas Bellin's interesting map of Australia was published in Abbe Prevost's "Histoire General Des Voyages". The Australian coastline as we know it today is vastly distorted on this eighteenth-century map. It shows mainland Australia joined both to Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) and Papua New Guinea. A partially depicted coast of New Zealand is also shown. Textual notes (in French) reveal the extent of Bellin's conjectures regarding these coastlines. A fine example of one of the very few pre-Cook maps to focus on the region.
