A good example of one of the earliest Ptolemaic world map now generally available to collectors. Although taken to be a copy of Martin Waldseemuller's 1513 ancient world map, Fries' map has also set the cartographic detail within a curved trapezoidal projection and added a northern extension, representing Scandinavia. These were features first utilised in the Ulm 1482 edition of Ptolemy. Fries' map was first published in Strasburg in 1522 and this example is the 1541 Vienne edition of the map - identifiable by the small section of the woodblock missing, at top right, where the corner had broken off in the printing house. In good, clean condition.
