Samuel Augustus Mitchell's "New Universal Atlas ..." comprised finely engraved and delicately hand-coloured maps and plans of all areas of the world. Steam boat routes are listed at each side while an inset detail of the "Lead Region" of the northern part of the State and south of the Wisconsin River. A resurgence of atlas production in North America during the 1840s and 1850s reflected an emerging mass market fuelled by prosperity and mobility. Mitchell was one of the proponents of this with his "New Universal Atlas" first published in 1846. A native of Scotland, Mitchell became a prolific publisher of geographical works when he emigrated to the United States. Walter W. Ristow notes that Mitchell employed as many as 250 persons in his Philadelphia establishment, which he took over from Henry S. Tanner in the mid-nineteenth century. Due to ageing of the paper these maps have been cleaned, but are very attractive records of the individual states - in many cases amongst the earliest individual maps after statehood.
