An attractive example of the first printed map of these two Lake District counties. Christopher Saxton's important atlas of England and Wales, the first national survey to be published, was the culmination of, predominantly, his own surveys that were made between 1570 and 1578, and from which thirty three county map plates were engraved by at least seven different engravers. This plate has the signature of Augustine Ryther, who engraved four of the maps and who is recorded as one of the first English map engravers. The plate is elegantly engraved with ships and sea monsters off the coast, the royal coat of arms and those of the courtier Thomas Seckford, the instigator of the project and Saxton's patron. Laid on archival tissue, nevertheless an attractive example of an important map.
