A scarce Italian plate showing the four major movements of the fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar based on a French publication by A.Tardieu of around 1817. Delicate shading is used to show the position of the French, Spanish and English fleets and their manoeuvres throughout. The plan is signed by Luigi De Salvatori as mapmaker at lower left and by Federico Gatti and Gaetano Dura as lithographers at lower right. Gatti's earliest works date from 1823 when he was associated with the Topographical Office in Naples (http://www.sullacrestadellonda.it/cartografia/federico_gatti_biografia_en.h tm). The presence of a centrefold suggests that this plan was bound into a book or atlas. In good, clean condition. Not listed on COPAC or WorldCat.
