Unusual map of the United States, from John Thomson's quarto world atlas, drawn by the leading London mapmaker James Wyld Sr. A finely engraved vignette depicts "The Fall of Niagara". While apparently geographically up-to-date, this map is interesting as one of a small group that depict the state of "Franklin" (or Franklinia), established in what is now eastern Tennessee, which existed between 1784 and 1788. Thomson's map is one of the last to show this feature, many years after the state had ceased to exist.
