1652 with maps of each of the continents engraved by Will Trevethen. For the 1663 edition, and editions thereafter, Henry's widow Anna had new maps engraved, bearing her name, by Robert Vaughan (and Johann Goddard in the case of the map of Asia) for her publication of the work and the 1670 edition sold by Philip Chetwind, as here. All the maps are distinctive and
attractive, and the map of the Americas includes the cartographical misconception of California as an island. A fascinating explanation of the state of geographic knowledge at this time. Maps trimmed close and repaired. Folio. Engraved Tp, Tp printed in red and black, lacking the introduction to the reader found in other editions, pp.1-28 (lacking Tp to the "First
Book"), pp.31-1095 (with some numbering errors and the Tp for the "Fourth Book" and the "Appendix" without a page number) with four folding copperplate engraved maps of the continents, pp.[i] blank, pp.[xxxix] tables, pp.[i] blank. Panelled calf rebacked (with a red moroccao title and raised bands to the new spine), edges worn and gilt decoration rubbed, new endpapers, hinges split. Internal text pages in generally clean condition. Original blank endpapers (also present) now worn.
