Nine copperplate engraved folio map sheets bound. Rebacked three-quarter calf with original marbled boards and new endpapers and guards. "To Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn Bart. LLD, Member Of Parliament, Lord Lieutenant And Custos Rotulorum Of The Counties Of Denbigh And Merioneth, Colonel Of The Antient British Fencible Cavalry, Steward Of The Hundreds Of Bromfield And Yal And Vice President Of The Welsh Charity School This Map Of The Six Counties Of North-Wales Is Most Humbly Inscribed By His Obedient Humble Servant John Evans". The map was engraved by Robert Baugh and was published June 1st 1795 in Lwynygoes. This magnificent map is at the large scale of 3/4 inch to one mile allowing for immense detail of this mountainous and sparsely populated, certainly at the time of surveying, region. This was the largest map of the area prior to the publication of the Ordnance Survey one inch map. The dedication to Sir Watkin William Wynn is accompanied by a large illustration of Vale Crucis Abbey and other decorative features accompany the extensive and careful cartographic detail. The Flintshire and Denbighshire sheets are dated 1794 suggesting that the sheets may also have been published separately. An important, rare and impressive publication.
