An attractive chart of the North Sea including Holy Island. Coastal detail extends from Sunderland to Goswick and north is oriented to the bottom of the page. An inset at lower left shows "Barwick" with the low and high water marks. The chart is dedicated to "Capt. Will Davies Vice Admirall To The Rt. Honorable The Earle Of Torrington" in a decorative cartouche at upper right. Captain Greenvile Collins was one of the most important English mapmakers and was "Hydrographer to the King". In 1681 Charles II appointed Collins to undertake a "survey of the seacoasts of the Kingdom by measuring all the Sea coasts with a chain and taking all the bearings of the headlands". The engraved maps were apparently available separately as they were completed and by 1693 the charts were published in atlas form, entitled "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot". This sea-atlas contained 47 charts of the British coast, and proved a great commercial success. Collins' atlas was much needed as, until its publication, British mariners sailing in British waters had been dependent on the earlier sea-charts of the Dutch. With both charts and sailing directions, Collins' atlas filled a gap in the market. As a consequence of its popularity, the atlas was re-issued throughout the next century. The original plates are
distinctively engraved and are usually found on thick paper. This has the signature of the engraver, F.W.Oetjes, at lower left. Minor marginal staining.
