A view of the volcano of Solfatara near Pozzuoli (Naples) in southern Italy. The volcano is dormant but emits jets of steam - evident in this engraving. A short lettered key, in Latin at the top of the page and French at the bottom, identifies the different jets. The vapours have attracted tourists and have been used for medicinal purposes since Roman times. The imprint of Pierre Mortier appears at lower left suggesting publication in Mortier's 1704 edition of the "Nouveau Theatre D'Italie ...".
