A small, simple and scarce map of the Orkney Islands that was published in "Dix's Juvenile Atlas, Containing Forty Four Maps With Plain Directions For Copying Them, Designed For Junior Classes". This charming map was intended for educational purposes and to be instructive in the teaching of geography
in schools. The outline maps were intended to be copied by students - as such, geographical detail is constrained to regional outlines and major physical features only. Thomas Dix was a schoolmaster in Northamptonshire then a surveyor at North Walsham in Norfolk, according to "Tooley's Dictionary", and this was his first atlas publication for the "juvenile" market he knew so well through his work in schools. Survivals of maps of
this type are relatively scarce as they were intended for practical use, rather than merely reference or display. Minor restoration to small areas of paper weakness.
