A fascinating and unusually graphic map of Paris and the surrounding regions, from Jean Le Clerc's "Theatre Geographique". The countryside is shown at war, with horsemen, cannons, battalions of pikemen and supply trains. The towns of Laigny and Corbueil are besieged. A coat of arms is shown at the head of the page. Le Clerc was one of the fourth generation of a family of booksellers and printers. Taking refuge in Tours with his family after trouble in Liege, he worked with M. Bouguereau, plates from whose "Theatre" formed the core of his own atlas. Le Clerc died in 1621 or 1622, but his atlas continued to be published after his death, bearing the address of his widow.
