Octavo. Tp, pp.[iv] tables, pp.1-273. Rebacked calf, panelled spine with raised bands and green morocco label. New endpapers. Manuscript additions of a previous owner to free endpapers. Titlepage trimmed close, one or two marginal nicks throughout. The titlepage states this is the fourth edition printed and sold by Thomas Bowles, and has a printed date of 1730. The atlas was first printed in 1720 with later editions thereafter. The "Britannia Depicta" is the most popular and successful Ogilby derivative atlas, reproducing Ogilby's road strip maps at a reduced size and adding individual county maps with immense detail. Emanuel Bowen proved to be one of London's most active and influential mapmakers in the eighteenth century. The fine engraving and minute detail displayed in these maps is a reflection of his skill. This is the fourth edition of this travellers' pocket book - also intended for "the general use of the Gentleman and Tradesman".
