This detailed map of Hampshire was published in Cary's "New And Correct Atlas". Cary was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher, working between 1787 and 1834 in London. John Cary was apprenticed to William Palmer, a noted engraver, in 1770, and soon gained a reputation as a maker of globes, both terrestrial and celestial, becoming the foremost globe-maker of his day. He is perhaps best known for the atlases that he engraved and published. Cary's maps are of a very high technical standard, being finely engraved, but are also designed to be functional; striving for accuracy rather than decoration, which emphasises the level of detail combined with a clarity of presentation. This map is accompanied by the original text sheet describing the county.
