From the first world atlas produced in England, "Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World", this is one of the most sought-after and best known images of the Middle East. John Speed's map is based on earlier maps by Hondius and Mercator, but, with the addition of decorated borders, is the only map of the region in the "carte-a-figures" style. Side panels depict dramatically costumed figures, while the upper border features scenes and plans of notable places including Constantinople, Alexandria, Cairo, Damascus, Rhodes and Famagusta. The large title cartouche is an elaborate interworking of metalwork, swags of fruit, tasseled ribbons and two strange mythical beasts, all topped with the crescent coat of arms. English text on the reverse describes the region, while notations on the map itself add to the informative nature of this most attractive map.
