Nouvelle Carte De L'Europe Dans Son Etat Actuel ...
|
Printed on four sheets joined, this is an impressive map of Europe detailing the territorial settlements laid down by the Treaty of Vienna in 1809. The Treaty was also known as the Treaty of Schönbrunn, and was signed between France and Austria at the Schönbrunn Palace of Vienna on 14 October 1809. Harsh peace terms were imposed throughout Europe; Austria ceded Tyrol and Salzburg to Bavaria, parts of Poland to the Duchy of Warsaw, and Trieste and Dalmatia south of the Sava River to France. The Papal States are also shown as belonging to France, and Belgium and the Netherlands are not entirely separate from France. The title cartouche lacks any reference to the date of publication and perhaps the mapmaker and publisher recognised the transient nature of the peace process and borders at this time. The lack of reference to a specific date would allow re-issues of the map with altered details. Here colour (attractive and later hand) is also used to further clarify the political boundaries at this time. An engaging map and an accurate snapshot of Europe's politics at this time.
