A Map Exhibiting The Retreat Of The French Army From Moscow ...

In three distinct panels showing the retreat of Napoleon's army in 1812 (although the map itself was published in 1815) from Moscow back to Paris. The places where battles along the route were fought are clearly shown by means of a pair of crossed swords. In 1812 Napoleon had amassed an army of some 450,000 soldiers in Poland hoping to invade Russia and bring her onside. Napoleon entered Moscow on 14th September 1812, burned the city, much of which had been constructed of wood, with his many troops nearby. The Russians were incensed by his actions and united in defence against their homeland - Kutuzov's army was still intact and stationed nearby at Kaluga. They were to fight back forcing Napoleon to retreat to Smolensk. The map documents his further retreat through Minsk, Konigsberg, Dresden and Leipzig to Paris.
