A Large Chart Of The Island Antegua

A Large Chart Of The Island Antegua

An unrecorded version of John Thornton's fine chart of Antigua, the earliest separate printed map of the island. This plate is known in three states; the second dated 1701, and the third with the imprint of Samuel Thornton. This version, from a new plate, is not recorded by Coolie Verner or R.V.Tooley. A close copy of the original plate, the title is now in a rectangular, rather than oval, frame. The other easily discernible difference is in the shoal on the lower left border, which has the lettering engraved to be read from the left on the second plate, rather than the right. This map was immediately superseded in the 'Fourth Book' by a new and smaller map 'A Large Draft of the Island Antegua', which appeared set in the text, from 1716 onwards.
