Thomas Moule's maps of the English counties were published in atlas form from 1836. When Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837 the original frontispiece to the work showing William IV was replaced with an image of Queen Victoria. Two early versions of the Queen did not meet with royal approval and their publication was relatively short-lived. This version 'reigned' showing the Queen with sceptre in hand and with a suitable level of modesty (an earlier version had proved unpopular because too much of the royal decolletage was displayed!).
