Valk's titlepage incorporates a bustling selection of figures; Atlas, Geography, Cybele, Neptune and perhaps History surrounded by a numerous putti engaged in erstwhile tasks. Above the Angel of Fame with a trumpet in each hand emphasises the importance of this work. Minor restoration to marginal tears. The Valks, along with co-publishers, the Schenks, were among the most prolific and best known publishers of eighteenth-century Amsterdam, issuing prints, maps, books and atlases. Their work was invariably finely presented, though primarily reissued from other map-makers' printing plates, including Visscher, De Wit, Jansson and others. However, their work demonstrates the precision and elegance associated with maps and engravings produced in the period, particularly evident in this titlepage.
