Engraved by R.Grave and published by W.Smith in London this is an attractive head and shoulders portrait of John Norden (c.1547-1625) in 1614. Norden was an estate surveyor, topographer and county mapmaker. A John Norden is also known as an author of devotional works and there is some debate as to whether they are one and the same. Norden was made Surveyor to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1605 and surveyed more than 176 manors in this capacity. Lord Burghley also acted as his patron. He is perhaps best known for the "Speculum Britanniae" and county maps contained therein.
