A scarce and interesting atlas of innovative maps of the world printed in embossed style on "plasticised" card to illustrate the physical relief of the world's countries and continents. Quarto. Tp, Contents, 31 (26 relief) maps with accompanying text. The third edition of this magnificent relief atlas, the first having appeared in 1880. Half red calf with buckram boards ex public library copy with shelf mark on spine, unnamed library label and library-card sleeve inside fc. Boards re-hinged and signs of use, but overall quite acceptable. There are 31 maps in total (25 embossed, 6 plain) showing the countries of Europe, individual maps including Australia, New Zealand, Cape Colony, India and so on. The World map indicates British Possessions with inset details of Heligoland, Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, Aden and Hong Kong. Each map is bound with additional card border to protect the raised embossed detail and backed with a page of geo-descriptive text. Many of the maps bear the imprint of Swan, Sonnenschein and Allen and some also have the imprint "Plastic School Atlas" - possibly a proposed but never-used title. An attractive example of nineteenth-century printing experimentation.
