A strange, interesting and attractive small hemispheric map of the North Pole and the seas around, many of which were purely fanciful. Engraved by John Gibson the map appeared in "The Gentleman's magazine", the dominant monthly periodical and shows many of the theoretical concepts associated with attaining a sea route across the Arctic to Asia. North West America is particularly unusually depicted with a large West Sea occupying the landmass, large Lakes and waterways leading from the Pacific towards Hudson and Baffin Bays. Protective upper border instated but no loss of text.
