Caroline Herschel — the world's first professional woman astronomer, (16th March 1750 – 9th January 1848). Herschel was born in Hanover and later in life moved to Bath to join her brothers, William and Alexander, where she developed her skills of astronomy and music. Here she can be seen with William polishing a telescope element, probably a mirror, whilst Caroline adds some kind of lubricant.
