Chart of the North coast of Scotland with the Orkney, Shetland and Faero Isles. North is shown to the base of the chart. The Van Keulen family were the leading chart-makers in the Netherlands from about 1680 until 1885; despite being a private firm, for most of this time they were essentially official chart-makers to the Dutch Admiralty. The firm was established by Johannes van Keulen (c.1654-1715). He enrolled in the
Amsterdam booksellers' guild in 1678 and employed the noted chart-maker Claas Jansz Vooght, who contributed the mathematical and chart-making expertise that the firm became noted for. With expert restoration to small areas of paper weakness.
