A double-hemisphere polar projection world map set within an elaborate, and separately printed, frame border with panels of text at either side. Cartographically the map illustrates pre-Cook knowledge with the Australian east coast extending to incorporate Van Diemen's Land and Point du St. Esprit. The Pacific north-west of America is shown to be indented with the "Sea of the West" and the various convoluted waterways surmised by the French theoreticists after Du Fonte. The text describes the discovery of America and has notes on the "Terres Arctiques" and "Terres Antarctiques Ou Australes" listing the then-known regions, their explorers with their respective dates and so on. An interesting and unusual piece.
