Das Neu-Beharnischte Gross-Britannien
|
With large maps and detailed town plans, a fascinating record of Britain at a crucial period in her history. Quarto. ff.[i] frontispiece, Tp, pp.[iv]. pp.1-1094 with 51 maps and portraits, pp.[xviii] register. Vellum binding housed in a modern grey solander box. Contents a little browned. An attractive copy of a scarce history and description of the British Isles with maps, plans and engravings. The maps include three large, finely engraved and very detailed plates of England and Wales (Shirley, Printed Maps Of The British Isles, Anon 2), of Scotland and of Ireland. There are also 23 small town plans including London, York, Chester, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Exeter, Canterbury, Edinburgh and Dublin which, although derived from the earlier work of Braun and Hogenberg and Speed, include updated information, that city's coat of arms, and appropriate vignette decoration. Throughout the text there are a number of engraved portraits of significant characters in Britain's history including Oliver Cromwell, Thomas Fairfax, Titus Oates amongst others. Typically for a German publication of the period paper quality is not of the finest and there is some browning of text leaves, however, this is not to the detriment of the well detailed plans and maps in this fascinating volume.
