Visscher's map of England and Wales, offered here with the imprint of Petrus Schenk, delineates the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms by means of colour as well as 'modern' county boundaries. Post roads throughout the country are carefully delineated and the whole is accompanied by a flamboyant title cartouche. This cartouche is surmounted by a wise and learned group of figures holding scrolls, books and other instruments. Beneath the title the Royal Arms with lion and unicorn is also shown. The names of the designer and engraver, Philipp Tiedeman and Gelliam van den Gouwen, are carefully worked into the cartouche. This magnificent whole is dedicated to William III. Expert restoration to the centrefold, not affecting the printed area, otherwise in good condition.
