Planisphaerium Coeleste
|
Georg Christoph Eimmart's influential map of the heavens and stars was
first published in 1705 and was copied by a number of other, predominently German publishers. This example would seem to follow the model of Matthaus Seutter with heavenley figures placed above the title banner. The plate also includes diagrams of day and night on earth and the monthly orbit of the earth at the top of the map. At the bottom of the map five diagrams show the monthly orbit of the moon, a Tychonic model of the planetary system, the Copernican system, Ptolemaic planetary theory, and the relation of annual orbit of the sun and the seasons. This example would not seem to follow exactly the Seutter imprint listed in Warner's "The Sky Explored", but is perhaps a slightly later example with the imprint removed. Laid on archival paper and with one or two tears repaired, nevertheless a very decorative piece.
