Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) were co-publishers of the monumental "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", published from 1572 onwards. Designed as a companion to Ortelius' world atlas the "Theatrum", this enormous work, which was expanded to six volumes by 1617, incorporated over 500 city plans and views. It must be viewed as one of the most ambitious book producing ventures of all time and among the greatest achievements in the history of cartography. This is the titlepage to the second book of the atlas and shows Cybele with her castellated crown and lion at her feet overlooking the title panel. She is flanked by the figures of Religion and Politics, emphasizing the role they play in modern civilization. At the bottom of the page is a rural scene. Protective right margin added with small area of manuscript reinstatement.
