Small octavo. pp.567 [lxv]. With final blank. 8 woodcut diagrams appear in Lib. II, including a T-O map of the world. Negligible paper repairs to the titlepage, first few leaves slightly soiled and a little water staining later on. Recently bound in older vellum, fresh endpapers and gilt title to spine. Printed T-O format world maps based on the works of fifth-century Macrobius appeared in a number of Renaissance works and Shirley notes their appearance into the mid-sixteenth century. This work bears a manuscript date of 1564. "In Somnium Scipionis" contains discourses on a number of subjects including moral virtue, astronomy, music and geography, amongst others. The 'Saturnalia' comprises conversations regarding the Roman festival of Saturnalia. The small woodblock map, appears on page 144, is a successor to the simple diagrammatic T-O representation, visualised one northern and one southern continent, that appeared in earlier works. This T-O map is based on Greek beliefs with an all encompassing outer ocean, surrounded by decorative windheads within an outer sphere. The geography is recognisable, though vague, and represents a surprisingly advanced classical view of the world.
