John Speed's map of Hampshire from his atlas, "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine". The map includes the coats of arms of local gentry as well as a town plan of Winchester. There is also a depiction of a battle from "The warres betwixt Maud the Empresse (intituled Lady of England unto whom all the Nobility had sworne Aleagance) And King Stephen Earle of Bolloigne, her Cosin germane ..." in 1141. This map has the imprint of John Sudbury and George Humble in Pope's Head Alley but lacks the addition of the word "Regnum", which Skelton links to 1627 editions of the Hampshire map. However, the decorative initial verso letter also points to a 1627 publication date so this example of the map is perhaps an unusual variant. Minor centrefold wear. John Speed (1552-1629) is arguably the most famous English cartographer of any period as a result of his atlas "The Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" in which his maps of the individual English counties appeared. The maps are perhaps the best known and amongst the most sought-after of all county maps. The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up- to-date sources available, predominantly those of Saxton and Norden. However, Speed also made innovations of his own - introducing town plans on many of the maps, vignette scenes of topographical, historical or archaeological interest and also the coats of arms of local Earls and Dukes. The overall effect is to produce very decorative, attractive and informative maps.
