In 1522 Lorenz Fries produced a slightly reduced-size version of Martin Waldseemuller's edition of the classical cartography of Claudius Ptolemy that had first appeared in 1513. This woodblock engraving demonstrates the traditional perception of the British Isles with an eastward slanting Scotland, with mainland Ireland placed too far north, and with a relatively ill-defined English and Welsh coastline. This example is identifiable as being from the 1535 edition of Fries' work (edited by Melchior and Gaspar Treschel) by the heading on the reverse; "Europae Regionum".
