Engraved by the Dutch artist, Reiner Vinkeles, Gerard Mercator is shown here in a head and shoulders portrait based on the drawing of Jacob Buys. The portrait was published in this form in a multi-volume Dutch dictionary, which also included portraits of Petrus Bertius and Petrus Plancius.
